Last night I watched a documentary about the Zombies, and by the end I realized I had basically spent two hours watching an illustrated Wikipedia page. I learned things—I somehow never knew Rod Argent went on to form Argent—but I could have read most of it in ten minutes.
That feels useful to me in thinking about the Coctails film. I don't want to explain the band. The archive can do that.
What I want to get at is the stuff that doesn't fit very well into Wikipedia.
When I listen to “Abba Dabba Do Dance” and hear all of us laughing at the end, that's part of what made the Coctails wonderful to me. It's that thing that happens when the four of us are in a room together. Something slightly ridiculous and funny and completely natural that you couldn't really summarize as information. And why that song is stupidly simple and completely insane. How you have to count in your head to keep up with how many bars (12) the drums stay solo.
That's the thing I would like the film to somehow show. I guess I do want to share something with others on this. Mostly it’s just for me though. Research on this thing that happened so long ago.
